Star Trek TNG: Episode 110 - A Matter of Time

"An apparent historian from the 26th century visits the Enterprise while they help a planet prevent a nuclear winter"

So here's the thing. This guy is not actually a historian from the future but a thief from the past who happened to steal the time machine from a historian from the future so now he has used the future historians time machine to go from the past to the future in order to steal artifacts from the Enterprise and bring them back to the past so he can reverse engineer them and become rich in the future. Sound kind of stupid? It is. At least it had Max Headroom in it.

for some reason every time i'd watch a random Star Trek TNG episode it was this one.
Ive seen this episode more often than any other TNG episode and its not even great.

I still like it though

It's a dumb story. Imagine if Somebody from the 40s traveled to last year, grabbed an iphone, and went back in time to "invent" it. Pffft.

But it was still a lot of fun because of the witty dialogue and the great performances.

It's not just the actual device that you would need to "invent" but all of the supporting technology that makes it work! Impossible I say
