Star Trek TOS: Episode 55 - ASSIGNMENT: EARTH

"During a historical research mission in 1968, the Enterprise unexpectedly encounters another interstellar traveler from the future named Gary Seven who appears to be attempting to alter history."

This is the most obvious attempt at a spinoff since ... well every other attempt at a spinoff. Oh yeah, and this episode is awesome. It just completely works for me. Sure it's 50% Gary Seven and his dumb secretary ... and sarcastic computer and his "pussy" cat, but damn if it ain't fun. I would have watched this show, Terri Garr is great as the secretary and Robert Lansing is very Flint-esque (James Colburn rules). He's labeled as a "futuristic James Bond". The episode keeps you guessing at whether or not Gary 7 is bad or good. Just when you think you have him figured, you realize that you are wrong. Oh ... and also Star Trek characters are in it.

The plot itself makes no sense. Why would the Enterprise have to go back in time to observe 1968? Why would Gary 7 have to alter anything? Well they do wrap this up by saying that everything that just happened was supposed to happen ... something like that.

Classic Roddenberry. At the end of the episode the cat that Gary has been cuddling the entire episode suddenly turns into a hot chick. Not only that but the woman is played by 1968 September Playmate of the Month Victoria Vetri. Some fun Vetri facts: "A nude photo of her was scanned and inserted into Apollo 12 Extra-vehicular activity astronaut cuff checklists" and in 2010 she murdered her husband.

ST TOS COUNTDOWN: 56 down 24 to go

i liked that they tried to make a spin off from a show that nobody watched anyways.

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you. This is one of my least favorite episodes ever. Teri Garr is adorable, but Gary Seven is the worst character ever. That guy sucks so bad, and this story makes no sense.

I don't remember a lot about this one. I never thought about it as a spin-off attempt, but in retrospect, you're probably right. It's the only explanation.

I actually really do like this episode and it really does make absolutely no sense.

i kinda wonder if they had any "future episode ideas" for the gary seven series.

There's actually a comic book series about Gary Seven by John Byrne that shows the further adventures of this character. It's... ok. I hate this episode, so I'm not the best judge. If you like this episode and also like comic, check it out.

I remember seeing that comic. It's just that everything Byrne has done since the early 90s has been really hit or miss.
Fantastic four
Alpha flight
X-men
All pretty awesome stuff
Then after that it was down hill

Don't get me started on John Byrne. In fact... I may have to write a blog post about him sometime.

But this comic was ok. He's actually done a fair bit of Star Trek stuff over the years, and it's all been pretty fun. His Gary Seven series worked as a pretty good sequel to the original episode, but I didn't love it for the same reasons I didn't love the episode: Gary Seven sucks.

John Byrne's art is still pretty good he just needs a good inker. It gets kinda clunky with heavy inks (not sure if he is doing it himself or not)

I hated his Superman run but it was still well done. Unlike other post crisis runs which i hated but was also amateurish.
