Star Trek TNG: Episode 103 - Darmuk

"Picard must learn to communicate with an alien captain who speaks in metaphors before a dangerous beast kills them both"

This was a very interesting and creative episode. The Enterprise meets up with a new race. The Universal Translator can't understand them.  For some reason the Captain of the ship takes Picard to a planet with him to fight a beast .... I guess the reason for this was for them to bond or something. Picard must understand him in order to survive. The race speaks in metaphor based on their own mythology. There is an awesome scene in which Picard tells the captain the story of Gilgamesh. Excellent acting by the great Paul Winfield and also an appearance by Ashley Judd as an ensign.

Saying jugs is so 80's white trash. And that is exactly why I still say it

This is one of those episodes that is so brilliant it blows your mind after you first watch it... and then, as you rewatch it a few more times, you realize it makes no sense.

A civilization that talks in metaphor? Huh? They still have language in which they share the metaphors, so why not just use language? Also, Darmok is mentioned in these metaphors... so how did he talk? Did he reference himself?

But it's such a clever idea, and, as you said, the acting is phenomenal. Great episode.

So true. The Translator couldn't figure the language out ... yet suddenly at the end he starts speaking English? But whatever, it was still cool ... and Picard telling the story of Gilgamesh as Dathon slowly dies is one of the best Star Trek scenes ever.

The best part of that scene was at the end, where Picard had just finished his story about Gilgamesh then there's this long, dramatic pause, and he goes, "oh wait! Did I say Gilgamesh? I meant Gil Gerard!"
