Star Trek TNG: Episode 139 - Ship in a Bottle

This marks the return of the rogue holodeck character Professor Moriarty, played wonderfully by Mr. Sheffield's butler. Also in this episode is the sexy cougar Stephanie Beacham.

If we remember from the last Sherlock themed episode, Moriarty is built so well that he is nearly human. In fact, Picard promises to figure out a way to get him out of the holodeck and into reality..although he was bullshitting. Now Moriarty ain't fuckin around, he wants out. He hijaks the ship by sort of turning it into a giant holodeck.

The Professor really isn't a bad guy actually, he has a love interest and is generally a decent person. Odd, considering he is supposed to be rather maniacal as a Holmes villain. Anyway, there is a happy ending ... and then after Picard gets out of the Asian massage parlor he figures out a way to give Moriarty what he wants. He puts him and his girl into a cube sized holodeck where they can live happily ever after. Or whatever.

This is one of my favorite episodes. In fact, I just watched it a few days ago. Clever story and fun performances from the cast and guest stars. Makes no sense at all though.

It really is complete asinine... but I loved it. You can't help but root for Moriarty.

is the holodeck a brand new technology??? its like they have no idea how it even works.

I liked how at the end of the episode, Moriarty leaves the ship and becomes the butler on The Nanny.

the entire The Nanny series was a holodeck simulation

It just occurred to me that this episode's ending was almost identical to the one from Relics. Both episodes end with either Moriarty and Scotty flying away in a shuttlecraft to go on a series of adventures.

So now I have to ask... was this their subtle hint that Scotty never actually survived the transporter cycle and he's just living somewhere as a pattern in the buffer?

That is a very interesting take on that
