Enterprise: Episode 23 – FALLEN HERO

Sort of a throw away episode. It starts off with T’Pol telling Trip and Archer that they need to get laid. So I’m thinking, OK this is going to be interesting. Then it proceeds to not be interesting. They have to transport this old lady Vulcan Ambassador to a Vulcan ship. Some ships start shooting at Enterprise because they want to stop her from testifying against them. Sort of like a mafia movie in space?!  This woman was a hero of T’Pol’s but it’s implied that she has recently disgraced the Vulcans so T’Pol is upset with her. Anyway in one scene Archer begins to talk about his hero (but doesn’t say who it is), I was expecting him to saying something stupid like Abraham Lincoln. I mean, when is this show going to stop referencing the years 1900-2000? How many times do you bring up Roosevelt or specific silent films? Has nothing happened in between the years 2050 and 2150? Christ, make some shit up or something! Like why the hell would anyone specifically give a crap about Sherlock Holmes in the year 2365? (TNG reference) Nothing against Holmes, I like Conan Doyle. He’s no Conan the Barbarian but he’s pretty damn close in my book. Really though, that was the best book that you could come up with in the past 400 years?!?!?  The actress that played the Ambassador was very good, she’s an Irish actress that may be mostly known in the states for the role of Eloise Hawking on Lost. Although I wouldn’t know because I have never seen that show.

You know what's kind of funny when you think about it? The fact that Star Trek did invent a private detective named Dixon Hill, but he was a private detective from the 1940s.

Yes Exactly. What's the deal with that? What happened to any kind of arts or pop culture during the lifetime of starfleet, the federation etc. ??

Also capt. naps, yes I AM aware that Lincoln was from the 1860's. If you believe that he actually died! He in fact faked his death and lived in a volcano in South America. He died in 1901 from consumption ... of semen.

They should be like "it's just like hitler in the 40s....2140s!!! When he hitler was cloned!"
And say it exactly like that

They should, that would take balls. Man i'm listening to the song St. Elmo's Fire, it may be one of the greatest songs ever constructed.

Then there was that episode where Data wanted to learn about comedy, and the Holodeck recreated Joe Piscopo to teach him.

But this is an interesting topic. Of hand (and I'll have to think a bit more about it), the only fictional pop cultural reference I can think of from Star Trek that takes place in our future would be Buck Bokai, Ben Sisko's favorite baseball player.

Fuck Waterpolo, Sisko's favorite sport was baseball, which is a legitimate sport that I can imagine might endure in some fashion into the 24th century. It's interesting to note that they made his favorite player a fictional character from the future (but far in his past) instead of, say, Ted Williams or Babe Ruth.

Conversely, in the episode "The Most Toys," about a collector of rare artifacts who kidnaps Data to add to his collection, Kivas Fajo has a Roger Maris baseball card. He even preserved the scent.

God, I'm a nerd.

Yeah you are. The best I could come up with Sherlock Holmes. Then I thought about Samuel Clemens but I guess they actually made him like a time traveler or something. They like to mention Hawking a lot too, I'm sure that 300 years into the Star Trek future there would be much better scientist to mention ... considering they are nonchalantly cruising around space.

Now all the stuff you mentioned about DS9 makes makes me respect that show even more. I initially had a hard time with a Star Trek minus an Enterprise, but Sisko is a cool dude and the writing was pretty darn solid.

I was trying to think of pop culture references that are actually fictional. There was also a character Vic Fontaine on DS9, but he was just a holodeck character, and not somebody who actually existed in the real world.

And DS9 is the best.

I think Buckaroo Bokai is the ultimate one.

One more nitpicky thing, anytime they mention movie stars it's always one's relevant to the 20th century. On Enterprise they have "movie night" and they are always watching artsy french films from the 60's ... i mean really??

capt.naps said...

I figure they would watch movies similar to "total recall" where you don't sit down and actually watch the film but you download a memory of having seen the film.

"I am going to watch a new adam sandler movie......how disappointing"

You guys are funny. You should have some sort of nerd roundtable podcast or something.

"Kivas Fajo has a Roger Maris baseball card. He even preserved the scent."

In fairness, they're probably going to do away with actual baseball cards in the future. It's all going to be electronic. There probably isn't a Buck Bokai rookie card that exists on a piece of cardstock.

I dunno about that. Baseball fans are a very nostalgic bunch. They love tradition even more than Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof.

Was that a good line?

Donald said...

And, of course, I should have specified that he preserved the sent of the bubble gum.

capt.naps said...

baseball fans are a cowardly and nostalgic lot. so my disguise should strike fear into their hearts., i shall dress like a.....BAT....get it?? a baseball bat...an actual animal also a bat!!!! its a pun

Donald said...

Marvel did that Bat-Man joke in an issue of What The?! Anybody else remember that comic?

Mugato said...

Was What If?! enough, they had to go and create What The?! ?

I actually agree that at some point baseball cards may not exist, at least on that same cardstock. Maybe on metal? Who knows. They already have done away with gum. I actually had an unopened pack of 1987 Topps baseball cards. I opened it up about a year ago, and I ate the gum. It was dreadful.

It's weird because I steal all my jokes from "not brand ecch" and not usually "what the!?"

capt.naps said...

also lets not forget...that TOS episode where they find space hippies!!! HIPPIES!!! we barely have those people today and they are roundly mocked for their terrible music and manner of dress!!!
do we also have space hipsters in the future?? do they ride space fixed gear bikes??? and drink space PBR?

what music are they going to listen to in the future that we listen to today?? probably not hippie crap. I'd guess beethoven and bach really because 100 of years later we still have yet to write better music (except for Black Eyed Peas)

Good point. It would be like findong Blind Melon floating in space ... except the guys dead.

Also, I just noticed Donald's posting about the Joe Piscapo TNG episode. Boy, that probably seemed a very safe choice at the time of filming ... but now, well it's just ridiculous.
