This episode is the pinnacle of the budget constraints imposed on TOS. They literally use no set. It looks exactly like a stage play. Black background, a few props and spot lighting. In this sense, it’s a very interesting episode to watch. If you ever wondered if a Star Trek stage production would work (much like I do daily!), well this episode proves it’s possible.
“While visiting a doomed planet, the landing party is subject to torturous experiments by powerful aliens.” These aliens are tasked with saving one race from a supernova. They are now testing one such race by subjecting one of them to watching the torture of McCoy … for some reason. The subject is named Gem and she is a mute Empath. The woman does a fine acting job as Gem, she must act in silent movie style and pulls it off nicely. In the end she passes the test and Kirk and crew are sent away. The plot is not the best, but the visuals are worth a watch.

Hmm...a Star Trek stage play, eh? I'd go to see that.
This was Woody Harrelson's favorite Trek episode, until he realized it's not actually called" The Hempath."
