People on Earth are very on edge because of this. They are getting on board with anything that the government, including detainment and forced examinations. Sisko's father (who runs a Creole restaurant) is one of the only people to resist this, basically saying "whatever happened to my freedom". This all sounds eerily familiar to things that are happening right now... in real life! So eventually the entire power grid goes down out of nowhere and a state of emergency is declared on Earth....
